The International Institute of Film Science and Art solemnly announces today that the senior scholar Amy Villarejo has officially joined the Institute as a Fellow! Amy Villarejo is a pillar in the field of film and media studies. Currently, she serves as the Chair and Professor of the Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media. From 1997 to 2020, she held the position of Frederic J. Whiton Professor of Humanities at Cornell University, deeply engaging in teaching and research work in the Department of Performing and Media Arts and the Department of Comparative Literature. She has cultivated numerous outstanding talents and injected fresh blood into the academic community.
Her academic works have extensive and far-reaching influence. With her book Lesbian Rule: Cultural Criticism and the Value of Desire, she won the Katherine Kovacs Best Book Award from the Society of Cinema and Media Studies. The unique perspective and profound analysis in the book have opened up a new situation for queer film research. Ethereal Queer: Television, Historicity, Desire delves deeply into the relationship between television media and queer culture, providing important theoretical support for related research. Film Studies: The Basics has become a classic introductory reading for many students studying film. The Oxford Handbook to Queer Cinema, co-edited with Ron Gregg, comprehensively combs the context of queer film research and has become an authoritative work in this field. Her academic papers published in well-known journals such as Social Text and GLQ have also continuously triggered in-depth thinking in the academic community on key issues in the field of film and media.
In terms of academic management practice, Amy Villarejo has also achieved remarkable results. During her time at Cornell University, she successively led the innovation of the Women's Studies Program, served as the Chair of the Department of Performing and Media Arts, and initiated the Milstein Program in Technology and Humanity, promoting the development of interdisciplinary research. Since 2022, she has served as the Chair of the Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media at UCLA, leading the discipline to achieve continuous breakthroughs in teaching and research.
